Cheap Milan Flights

Interested in a cheap flight to Milan? Stick around then as we’re going to offer some tips on how to increase your odds of getting a cheap Milan flight and as well as advice on related topics.

1. First things first: I’m going to repeat myself – as I’ve said this in other parts of this site as well – but the best way to book a cheap Milan flight is to book early. Most airlines sell their tickets in batches and the first batch is the cheapest. By waiting and booking late – meaning close to departing time – you increase the odds of buying a ticket from a more expensive batch. So plan well in advance and book early!

2. One other tip that might help you get a cheap Milan fare is to check out what airlines are flying from your airport of choice, check their sites out and subscribe to their mailing lists. They often have tickets on sale or various promotions in these mailing lists and you may get lucky once in a while and grab some cheap tickets for Milan.

3. Similar to the previous method, you may also want to be on the lookout for new airlines that start operating flights from your airport of choice as one of these might actually go to Milan and will most likely offer a special promotion at the start. Long shot, I know, but such sales are awesome so it’s rather worth it.

3. There are loads and loads of low-cost airlines flying from many European locations to one of Milan’s three airports. Some of the airlines worth checking are Ryanair, Easyjet, Germanwings, Blue Air, Wizzair, etc. Do notice we’ve mentioned all cost airlines flying to and from Milan from all across Europe, not just Western Europe.

4. Some of these low-cost airlines are also running on domestic flights. If you were planning on getting a car between Milan and say, Rome, why not check out some of these sites and see whether there’s a flight that’s both cheaper and more convenient?

5. If you’re trying to find cheap flights to Milan from outside Europe then that’s tougher because your only option is regular airlines. You may want to check Alitalia and Lufthansa plus United Airlines and Continental if you’re leaving from the US. A good tip would be to check whether there’s a cheaper flight to another European destination and take a connecting low-cost flight into Milan from there.

6. You may want to know that Milan has three airports: Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio, the latter being actually located in Bergamo. Malpensa is the largest and is mostly used by regular carriers, Linate is mostly used for domestic flights and short international flights while Orio al Serio is used by many low-cost carriers. Malpensa and Orio al Serio are quite far, about 35 km away, while Linate is much closer to the city, only 8 km away.

7. Since booking a cheap Milan flight most likely implies using a low-cost airline and landing at Bergamo’s Orio al Serio, it’d be useful to know that there are trains running every half hour from the adjacent train station to Milan. Plus, every Milan rail station has a metro station close-by, which makes it very easy for you to get to where you need. The downside is that you need to take a taxi to the rail station in Bergamo. You can also take the bus though as buses are departing every 40 minutes.

8. From Malpensa to Milan you can get a bus or train. It takes around one hour to get to Milan using the bus and around 40 minutes using the train.

9. If you’d like to land at Orio al Serio and leave from Malpensa the same day or vice-versa, you should plan at least six good hours between arrival and departure or better yet, do that in different days.

10. There’s no bus/train connecting Linate with Orio al Serio so you’d be best to route your trip through Milan’s central station. On the other hand, since Malpensa and Linate have the same airport operator there is actually a shuttle bus running between them.

11. To be honest, when choosing a cheap flight to Milan don’t mind the airport since it doesn’t make much difference. The city can be easily reached at a decent price from all of them.

12. Speaking of decent prices, when it comes to Milan airport transfers you should use the bus airport transfer service offered by Terravision that runs between Bergamo’s Orio al Serio airport and Milan’s Central station and vice-versa. It is decently priced and can also be booked online.

13. Another Milan airport transfer service one can book online is the one offered by Viator. It is a private service so you’ll have your own driver that will be ready for you at your chosen location whenever you want, 24/7, be it airport or hotel or wherever. You can book it from the airport to the hotel or vice-versa. All there airports are available – Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio.

“It’s all good and well and thank you for the information but I still can’t seem to find a cheap Milan flight. What now?”

Well, you can always try this classic method of finding cheap flights anywhere, Milan included:

1. Start off by searching for cheap flights to Milan on travel aggregators such as Bing Travel, Yahoo! FareChase or Kayak. Keep a detailed track of any interesting flights you may find.

2. Now go check these booking engines: CheapTickets, Orbitz, Hotwire, Travelocity, Priceline, and Expedia if you’re coming in from the US or Canada or SkyScanner, Vayama or MoMondo if you’re coming in from Europe. Same here, do record the most interesting flights.

3. Last but not least, take another trip through all of the airlines we’ve mentioned above – Ryanair, Easyjet, , Germanwings, Blue Air, Wizz Air, Alitalia, Lufthansa, Continental, Delta – as well as any others you may have found and see what interesting flights you can find. Do – duh! – keep a record of such flights.

Why are you doing this step? Because many airlines, especially low-cost carriers, are not sharing flight info with aggregators and booking engines so they won’t have to pay them a fee and add an extra charge to the ticket price. Thus, such flights are only available directly through them.

4. We’re done and you should’ve ended up with a handsome list of interesting flights to Milan. Choose your cheap Milan flight from the list, the one you like best, book it and that’s it!

[...] 1. For your Milan flight to be cheap, you’ll have to book it online. Yep, you can save a ton of money by booking flights online and not through other offline methods. Nothing new here but it is worth saying. You should also book your flights early. Timing is one of the most important factors affecting flight ticket prices and you need to take advantage of it. Most airlines sell their tickets in batches; the batch with the cheapest tickets goes on sale first; once that’s done, a more expensive batch comes up for sale and so on and so forth until there’s nothing left. Of course, some airlines may burn through these stages and that makes it even more important to book early. You should also find low costs airlines operating in your area – or the cheapest of them if there aren’t any low cost airlines – and subscribe to their online newsletters. This way you’ll keep up with any promotions for cheap Milan flights they may be doing eventually. Enough about this though; for more you can check out our page on cheap Milan flights. [...]
